Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary...

I want to have a beautiful garden. The problems with this are:

1. My yard is mostly shady.
2. I have no experience or plant knowledge.
3. I have successfully killed off all my indoor houseplants. (Why would outdoors do any better?)
4. Perennials are expensive. (especially if they don't survive)
5. My husband can't tell the difference between a flower and a weed, and he cuts the grass.
6. I don't have the time to devote a lot of attention to achieving a beautiful garden.
7. I know nothing about soil condition.
8. I know nothing about drainage.
9. I can't figure out what plants will thrive in a particular spot, and I don't want to waste money on those that will just die.

I am intrigued by the Himalayan Blue Poppy. Unlike most poppies which prefer sun, this one likes shade...it will actually get sunburned. The plants are pretty pricey unless I buy seeds, which I am confident I could not grow. I tried to grow chives in a pot from seeds last year, and I grew more weeds in the pot than herbs. I have a black thumb. I need someone who knows what they're doing to come tell me what to plant where. Or if you can't come, I can send you a video detailing my yard. :o) Please?

I have always been fond of poppies. Our neighbor when I was growing up had a bed full of beautiful orange poppies growing next to the fence between our yards. When she moved, the new neighbors had a dog who trampled them. My mom tried to transplant some of the surviving ones to the other side of our yard, but they didn't take well. They still come up every year just on my mom's side of the fence, safe from dogs and children. But she has never had any luck moving them.

You should talk to my mom. She loves gardening and has lots of knowledge about plants and what grows where. And she is familiar with the climate where you are and the shady conditions of some yards.

She'd love to hear from ya!

Take some pictures of your yard and where you would like to add some plants, take it to the local nursery and they will give you more knowledge than you ever dreamed! They are there to help you understand all your questions. Don't go to Hardware type stores, they are just there to 'checkout'. So go to a local nursery specialized in your local zones and habitat. Best of luck with learning a new hobby. It can be as addicting as anything else.

The blue poppy is absolutely stunning. The backlit one looks like a watercolor painting! I'm going to have to look for them now for my garden.
